Grand Traverse Bay is the portion of Lake Michigan south of a line extending from the northernmost tip of Leelanau Peninsula east to a point a bit south of Charlevoix. It covers a surface area of 277 square miles of spectaular fresh water. The southern half of the bay is further separated into East and West Grand Traverse Bays by Old Mission Peninsula. Known for its spectacular rolling contours, awe inspiring views, and a climate ideal for grape growing, Old Mission Peninsula is a favorite destination for year round and seasonal residents as well as vacationers from around the globe. Traverse City is the largest town along the shoreline of the bay and is located at the very southernmost point of West Grand Traverse Bay. Other popular port villages include Elk Rapids, Suttons Bay, Northport, and Omena where marinas offer transient boat slips for lake-going visitors. Fishing on the bays can be tremendous and just about any freshwater fish you can think of can be had at different times of year. From carp to smallmouth bass to Lake Trout and Salmon and Steelhead, it truly is a world class fishery. Sailing is a very popular pastime on West Grand Traverse Bay especially. Smaller craft are usually safe, but care should be taken to watch the weather closely as with any large body of water.
